BURT NEWTON

HHS60 Loses Another Classmate

Burt Newton died on Friday, May 30, 2003. The following two emails came from Donna Merrick Newton and she has given me permission to share them with our group.

April 2, 2003
I don't know if John Burkowski has told you but Burt is home under hospice care.  He was diagnosed in July last year with brain cancer and was doing great until January when his body started rejecting the drugs.  We had missed most of the "reunions and STNY" because we were always traveling or involved in the business.  We just started building a log home in TN and planned on retiring for good in the next five years as our son was taking over the business when this happened.  The home is finished but we have not seen it.

We have taken care of Janie Long (HHS art teacher) since her retirement in 1973, medical bills ate all of her savings up after her retirement and she was confined to a wheelchair, so we kept  her in a condo we have in Miami Lakes and she lived by herself until she passed away in October of last year at 92, still cantankerous as ever.  Burt and I were her only "family" and I am so thankful that Burt was able to be with her in her last few days. She was a big part of his life after school helping him obtain scholarships for his education, more so that his own parents who saw schooling as a waste of time.

We are both so sorry we were always too busy to come to your gatherings....we were discussing it when I got your last email....Please keep me on your list and maybe, God willing, I can come to the next one.

Please give everyone our love and take care.
Sincerely,
Donna & Burt Newton

Dear Sandy,

Unfortunately Burt passed away yesterday morning.  He had tender care from the Vitas Hospice nurses that have been with us since March and stayed with him non-stop for the last 48 hours.  He was not in pain and went very peacefully with his family and many of our long time employees here with him.  He asked to be cremated and his ashes spread in Florida Bay off our dock at our house in Key Largo.  It was his favorite place.

I'm sorry I missed your call but I was at our son's house, we just had a new grandson on Valentine's day and I have not had much time to play and hold him, of course, his three year old sister wanted equal time to play too so I stayed and just came home now.

Our daughter and her famliy will be here from Phoenix on Wed night as she is a teacher and had to finish her Seniors finals and turn grades next week.  We are holding a "gathering" at a funeral home that is owned by a local family that we know on Friday evening,  Not a formal memorial service, but where all of our employees, their families, our cusotmers and friends can come to gether to remember Burt.

It has been a long ten months, but we will go on...Burt and I have worked together for over 30 years and the hardest part is having to continue without him there.  We were together 24 hours a day.

Please keep in touch and I would like to be able to come to any other functions you all have...or if you come down this way, please give me a call.  Burt and I went through the year book a month ago while he was bedridden and discussed everyone and wished we had come to some STNY functions to stay in touch.

Sincerely,
Donna
